BYRD HOUSE MARKET OPENS MAY 6th!!
The Byrd House Market Opens May the 6th with more vendors, crafts, music and fun. Come Join us for the fabulous start of our 2nd Market Season with special musical guests Blueline Highway.To mark the beginning of its second season, the Byrd House Market will host a Grand Opening Celebration on Tuesday, May 6 from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. In addition to the market's vast array of farmers, artisans and local producers, Blueline Highway, Richmond's beloved alternative country/folk/blues band, will be performing from 6-7 p.m.
Continuing on Tuesdays through October, the market will offer locally-produced food, meats and crafts sold directly by the farmers and artisans, while focusing on making cost-effective, fresh and sustainable food and quality products available to all of Richmond
The Byrd House Market is more than a place to buy local food and products -within one season it became a weekly tradition, it was designed to bring together communities and enrich lives. After opening last year as a pilot project for WBCH, the news about the market quickly spread across the city. It was such a resounding success that the Byrd House Market is now a permanent program, supporting the WBCH's mission of creating pathways to success for Richmond communities.
Markets historically served as an information resource and a family gathering place, as well as centers of commerce. As the nation's only settlement-house farmer's market, the Byrd House Market - a program of the William Byrd Community House (WBCH) in Oregon Hill - is dedicated to supporting Richmond residents by bringing important market aspects of city living back into our communities and consciousness.
The Byrd House Market also hosts a community garden where the neighborhood residents can cultivate their own vegetables. By doing so, the market strives to teach inner-city kids about the life cycles of a plant. They can sow their own seeds and take an active part in nurturing the plant to help it grow. In return, they learn to from personal relationships with the food they eat, and are actively involved in enriching their community.
Shopping at the Byrd House Market supports the efforts of William Byrd Community House to promote healthier eating habits, fighting childhood obesity and helping our communities understand the cycle of from seed to plant, to market, to plate. As you can see the BHM is not just a market, but a community garden, garden classes and a market. Join us and help us create a healthier Richmond.
